These Tips will Teach You How to Write Great Essays

Writing essays does not have to be difficult.  You will learn that once you get started, your essay will come together easier than you original thought it could if you follow these essay writing tips. Utilizing and practicing these essay tips will teach you how to write great essays.

First, Choose a Topic

  • If you haven’t been given a topic, choose a topic that interests you.  The more the subject matter interests you, the easier it will be for you to write about it.
  • If you like the topic, writing the essay will be more enjoyable.

Write Your Thesis Statement

  • After you choose a topic, come up with a thesis statement.  In a thesis statement, a side of an argument is taken.  You will support that side of the argument in the body of the essay.
  • Your thesis statement should only be one or two sentences long.

Begin Writing by Brainstorming

  • In brainstorming, you simply write whatever comes to your mind while paying no regard to organization or punctuation.  You just write to the point where your pencil never leaves the paper, or your fingers don’t stop typing on the keyboard.
  • The idea behind brainstorming is to get you writing.  As you brainstorm, your writing begins to flow and your ideas begin to take form and become cohesive.

Create an Outline to Organize Your Thoughts

  • Now, create a simple outline. Organize the outline to reflect the structure of a well written essay.  For example, your main outline points will have a section each for the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.
  • In the outline, include your thesis statement within the introduction, the supporting evidence you will write about in the body of the essay and your thesis statement re-worded in the conclusion section.
  • The more detailed and organized your outline is, the easier it will be to write the first draft.  The first draft will almost write itself.

Now, you are ready to write your first draft and final essay. At this point, writing the essay should come easy.  You’ve already done all the hard parts. As a final tip, remember to proofread and edit your work.  It’s helpful to read your work aloud and to share it with someone else.  Many students don’t do this, but you should.  Having someone else proofread your essay is invaluable.
