Organizing Your Time Wisely: How to Write Essays

Writing an essay is a common thing for all the students. But sometimes it takes too much time and effort. In order to rationalize your time and energy, just follow these simple steps:

  • Step 1: Start with a research

Before writing an essay, it is necessary to conduct research on the topic you have, in order to ensure that you have understood everything properly. Do not forget to take some notes and to write down the key points of your topic.

  • Step 2: Analyse the material

Think over what you’ve already read about your topic and make an outline of the essay in your mind.

  • Step 3: Do the brainstorming

This technique is a great way to create additional arguments and original insights for the essay you are about to write.

  • Step 4: Choose the central thesis of your essay

Thesis should serve as a core of your essay. All the arguments, pros and cons and other facts should be built around it. Roughly speaking, the thesis is the primary idea of your essay, expressed in one sentence.

  • Step 5: Make a draft

Outlining the plan of the essay can be very helpful. Having an outline, you will always know what goes next and you will be confident that you haven't forgotten anything. It is further recommended to make some brief descriptions of the points of your draft (just several simple sentences about the overall gist of the paragraph).

  • Step 6: Write the introduction

The opening paragraph of the essay, together with its title, is one of the most important parts of the essay. You have to make the reader interested in your piece of writing and introduce the thesis of the essay in this part.

  • Step 7: Main body of the essay

Each paragraph should be dedicated to some specific issue. For example, if writing a comparison of some literary heroes, one paragraph can be devoted to their similarities and the second – to their differences.

  • Step 8: Conclusion

Repeat the main thesis and the most prominent ideas of your essay one more time in order to emphasise them. In order to make the essay original, finish it with some call to action, famous quotation or a maxim.

  • Step 9: MLA style

Check that your essay corresponds to all the requirements of the Modern Language Association (MLA) style.

  • Step 10: Spelling, grammar, vocabulary, stylistics

Your essay is not ready until you proofread it and eliminate all possible grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes.
